Friday 12th November: Sustainable Water Solutions for the Built Environment
Cath Hassell, Director of ech2o, working with local authorities, developers and schools on water design for new build and retrofit
Gary Grant, Chartered Environmentalist, Member of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management, masterplanner and authority on water management and design
The prospect of drier summers and wetter winters means that construction professionals need to consider how to future proof their buildings by implementing sustainable water solutions. They also need to consider how water use contributes to a building’s overall environmental impact.
To design a truly sustainable water strategy for any site requires an understanding of how carbon efficient, as well as how water efficient any particular solution is. Environmental and regulatory drivers including the upgraded Part G for sustainable water solutions will be covered, and the role of behaviour change by building occupants will be considered. Delegates will learn how to fit their building into the water cycle, when to specify rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling systems, and the role of SUDS in a sustainable water strategy.
This whole day workshop will look at sustainable water solutions for the domestic and commercial sectors, from single buildings to whole developments, for new build and retrofit situations. Using actual case studies and group workshops, delegates will leave with the knowledge of how to choose the best solution for any given example, as well as a holistic understanding of the principles involved in good water management.
Cath Hassell is an expert in sustainable water strategies, low-carbon and zero-carbon technologies, with 17 years experience in the conventional plumbing industry, 11 years in environmental building. From 1998-2004 she worked at Construction Resources, designing and implementing rainwater harvesting, grey water recycling and solar technologies for domestic, commercial and industrial sites. She set up ech2o consultants ltd in 2004, is a founder member of the UK Rainwater Harvesting Association and a director of the AECB for 7 years. www.ech2o.co.uk
