8th October: A Renewable Energy Future for London
The day explores choices around solar, wind and hydro, heat pumps, CHP and biomass for cities, policy, standards and planning, and changes needed to the construction industry to allow for this sea-change in the way we power London. The workshop includes an introduction to renewable energy technologies, case studies of recent developments such as the Strata Tower and projects by Hoare Lea Consulting Engineers, as well as community scale developments. If you are involved in designing or specifying technologies for renewable energy generation, or working in a related sector such as development, law, insurance or planning, this event is for you.
Speakers
Ashley Bateson, Partner at Hoare Lea, says he became interested in the building sector when he realised that the construction and operation of buildings are responsible for a significant proportion of our environmental impact. He wanted to make a difference to how we use energy and work with architects to reduce environmental impact. As Head of the Sustainability Group, he advises on issues such as energy strategies, waste management, water conservation and procurement. He says the Heathrow East Terminal was one of the most exciting projects he has worked on. with overall carbon emission reduction of approximately 45% compared to a baseline regulatory compliant project.
David Linsley-Hood: Renewable energy consultant and senior lecturer at the Centre for Alternative Technology for 5 years, where he teaches on the Graduate School of the Environment’s Masters programmes in architecture and renewable energy. He is a qualified installer of PV, Biomass, SHW and Heat Pumps, and is actively involved with the training of UK renewable energy installers. He is also currently working on a doctorate on the viability of small scale biomass CHP for the UK.
Giovanni Festa: Design Director at WSP Buildings and involved in a number of projects in the UK and overseas. LEED accredited, Giovanni has a passion for low energy integrated design and sustainability. He works predominantly with a specialist team to work on passive engineering and façade performance and to establish the key engineering concepts. His main design input is at the conceptual and planning stages of a project where he often coordinates other specialists from the WSP Group. He has worked with a number of signature architects on award-winning schemes in many sectors, including the Strata Tower, London's latest tall building. Challenges often include balancing creative and innovative design with an affordable and appropriate design for the client.
