A 1-day masterclass on DIY small scale green roof construction in Leicester, in association with Transition Leicester. Led by John Little and Dusty Gedge, this practical, hands-on course is inspiring and fun.

The course will enable participants to learn about green roofs and their benefits. Background information will be provided on their history and evolution. The creation of wildlife habitats including local ecologies will be covered. Details will be given on the selection and purchase of suitable plants and substrates to be used on a green roof, and also the availability of all the materials.

Part of the course will be devoted to gaining practical experience in the construction of a green roof, with guidance from the tutor. By the end of the course, participants will have an overview of the benefits of green roofs and how they can be designed, as well as the practical skills necessary to build a green roof for their garden shed or similar structure. Information sheets will be provided on the day in the form of a CD rom.

Presented by Green Roof Training Ltd: John Little has over a decade of experience designing and installing green roofs and has won awards at Chelsea Flower Show for his work. Dusty Gedge is internationally renowned for his work to promote living roofs, instigating policy and co-authoring books with John and others on good green roof design. He is an urban ecologist, a director of the award winning Green Roof Consultancy and is President of the European Federation of Green Roof Associations. He recently presented WWF's challenge to create a Rooftop Rainforest on Sky TV.
